Lake Glen

The original dam
We moved back into our house in the bush 6 weeks ago after our last lot of tenants moved out.  We decided it's time to keep the house for ourselves and start turning our dreams into reality.   It's only been 6 weeks but there is so much to write about.  I'll start with the transformation of the dam into a lake.
The Lake taken from the deck

There were a few reasons for doing this, not the least being we need more water.  We have big plans for the gardens and therefore need a way to keep the water up to them.  The second reason was one of aesthetics looking out onto the dam has always been one of my favourite things about being here and now looking over "the lake" has made that even more enjoyable.

Ducks up early
The last reason for the enlargement was to make better use of the rain when it finally comes.  Every few years we get a flood and most of the water spills over the dam and onto the road, and at times has blocked the road.  Garry has planned the design of the dam so that we can "catch" a lot more of the flood water and hold it in our dam to use on our gardens.

The "lake" was only completed last week so it's still very bare around the banks. We need to spread some grass seed just before the rain comes and get the grass growing.   I have a picture in my mind of how beautiful it will be and I expect it will surpass that.  Already the duck families are loving the extra space.

A Brand New Year

A Brand New Year and a Brand New Day it was time to find a different walking route.  It's amazing what is going on so close to home but out of sight from our everyday routine.

Beautiful flowers, a gorgeous flame tree and knitwear for trees and signal posts.

It was a beautiful morning and a great start to a New Year with my two favourite dogs, Layla and Lupin.

5am Sunday Gardening

I was out in the garden at 5am this morning and spent a good two hours just trying to tame what had become a wilderness in only a short amount of time.   It's very very humid here and we are getting sunny days and some rain at nights which means everything is growing.  Unfortunately it's also bringing in all the pests and I've given up on growing Kale and Mustard Greens for now (among other things).

I really enjoyed the garden last Winter, we were virtually pest free and keeping it tidy was a lot more enjoyable in our beautiful Brisbane Winter.

Anyway no complaints we are still getting plenty to eat out of the garden and providing I'm out there at 5am all is good.

I can see I'm going to be making some Pesto in the next few weeks with all the basil I have.

I had a great little helper this morning. Except for the time she dug up a hole heap of dirt looking for a lizard.

This Week's Favourite Pictures

We've been having very tropical weather this week.  Some very heavy downpours at night followed by hot humid days.  Great weather for frogs and mozzies.  I'm starting to look forward to the dry cold winter.  (although I'm sure I'll change my mind when it's here).

The grass is growing as we watch it and Garry is spending 3 hours a week on the ride-on mower.  I'm sure he is looking forward to winter to.

There have been some great photo opportunities this week. Here are my favourites.

Sunset reflected in the dam

This is the road we live on.  You can see how heavy the sky is and how lush the grass is.  You can just see our dam on the right

Sunday Morning

I love the mornings and am so glad that I was born a morning person !   I have a lot of work on outside of my normal work at the moment so that means I need to spend a fair amount of time in my office on the weekends.  That's not hard, this is the view from my office window.

Before I start work in the mornings I go for a walk around the gardens and see what has happened over night.   This is a pumpkin I hand pollinated yesterday morning and hopefully it did the trick and will grow.  If we don't hand pollinate our pumpkins we don't get any.  I need to plant flowers to attract the bees.

Lilly sees me with the camera in my hand and sits in front of me in her best pose.

Layla and Lilly both come up to say Good Morning to the chooks.

On My Mind.................

One of the great things about spring is the beautiful sunrises.  This was the one I left on Monday morning to come back to the city.

Looking forward to being home again tonight.

Morning Storm

These are some pictures I took of a storm we had last Saturday morning.  In South East Qld morning storms aren't common so it was a very eerie feeling when this one came over.  There was some hail that fell but it was only small and thankfully didn't cause any damage to our growing vegie patch.

The storm moved really fast and was all over and done within an hour.

After the storm the Kangaroos came out to graze on the wet grass.
